When a Tooth Needs to Be Removed

Sometimes a tooth must be extracted to protect your child’s oral health.

This can happen if a baby tooth doesn’t fall out properly, if there is severe decay, infection, orthodontic needs, or issues with a wisdom tooth.

The Extraction Procedure

If an extraction is needed, the pediatric dentist may perform it during a regular visit or schedule a separate appointment. The procedure is usually simple, and you can discuss sedation options to ensure your child stays comfortable.

Aftercare Following an Extraction

After the procedure, your child should avoid using straws, rinsing forcefully, and eating hard or sharp foods.

A soft diet is recommended. For discomfort, children’s doses of Advil or Tylenol can help. If swelling occurs, apply a cold compress and contact the dental office if needed.
